Getting There: Two Roads In
🏔️ Key Monastery
Key Monastery
Over a thousand years old and still active the largest and most photographed monastery in Spiti, about 12 km from Kaza.
You've basically got two options, and which one you take really depends on the season and your appetite for hairpin bends.
The Shimla–Kinnaur route is the one we’d point most people toward, especially if it’s your first time. Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza. It’s around 520–570 km, and honestly, don’t try to do it in one shot — nobody should. Give it 2–3 days minimum. The upside of this route isn’t just that it’s open almost all year; it’s that you gain altitude slowly, which means your body actually gets a chance to adjust instead of protesting at 12,000 feet. Plus the Kinnaur stretch, with its apple orchards and river valleys, is gorgeous in its own right.
A sane way to break it up: Chandigarh to Kalpa on day one, Kalpa to Tabo (via Nako) on day two, and Tabo into Kaza on day three, with a detour to Dhankar and Pin Valley if you’re not in a rush.
